This insertion into a dilapidated 1885 firehouse restores the original spatial characteristics and brick and timber materiality, while using a seismically required steel frame to form a new mezzanine level and master bedroom suite. Combining form-defining millwork, carefully placed skylights, and an operable glass panel system allows for spatial variation, light transfer, and experiential interplay between floors. A raised roof deck with retractable glass solarium provides critical outdoor space at the new living level for this young family. |
